Pre-Operative Instructions

Regardless of the type of procedure you are having, in order to optimize the safety and outcome of your surgical procedure, it is critical that you carefully follow these preoperative instructions.

Two weeks before surgery: Please do not take any NSAIDS. This includes aspirin, motrin, alleve, naprosyn, and others. Celebrex is safe to continue to use.Please stop all vitamins / supplements containing vitamin E.

If you have questions about which medications are safe before surgery, please call or email our office or contact your surgeon via the patient portal.

Seven days before surgery: you should have scheduled your visit with pre - surgical testing. Feel free to call our office with any questions.

Please take your routine medications except as instructed.

Day before surgery:

Only liquids to eat after 12:00 Noon, unless your surgeon has told you otherwise.

Please use a magnesium citrate - soda at 3pm and then repeat at 9 pm the night before surgery.

These may be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy.

Clear liquids diet: Water, tea or coffee (no milk or non-dairy creamer); sweetners are ok. Soft drinks (orange, ginger ale, cola, Sprite®, 7-Up®, etc.), Gatorade®, Kool-Aid® Strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, orange, lemonade, etc.)

In the evening, place the scopolamine 1.5mg patch behind your ear. This may help prevent post- operative nausea and vomiting.

Nothing to eat after midnight!

Day of surgery:

Wake up with a positive attitude!

Remember: Nothing to eat or drink.

Please use a Fleet's enema in the morning before coming to the hospital.

Please bring a family member or friend to help.

Your surgeon will see you in the preoperative area to answer any additional questions.
After surgery, your surgeon will discuss your progress and findings only with the person(s) you designate before surgery.
